Box Shear Baler Cleaning Procedure
Safety First: Always disconnect the machine from power and engage the lockout/tagout system before cleaning. Allow moving parts to cool completely if the machine was in continuous use.
Cleaning Steps
1. Shearing Chamber Cleaning
Begin with the shearing chamber, the area most prone to debris buildup:
Materials Needed: Stiff-bristled brush, compressed air, dry cloth, metal-safe degreaser, lint-free rag
- Use a stiff-bristled brush or compressed air to remove metal shavings, dust, and small scraps
- For stubborn residue, wipe surfaces with a dry cloth (avoid water to prevent rust)
- For oil/grease deposits, apply metal-safe degreaser sparingly and wipe clean
Note: Never use water directly on blades as it can cause corrosion.
2. Hydraulic Components
Materials Needed: Damp cloth (water only)
- Inspect hoses, cylinders, and valves for oil leaks or grime
- Wipe with a damp cloth (water only), avoiding electrical connections
- Clean oil fill cap and dipstick before reopening
3. Baling Area and Exterior
Materials Needed: Broom, cloth
- Remove material fragments from the baling area
- Sweep loose debris from the floor around the machine
- Wipe down exterior panels, controls, and safety guards
4. Final Protection
Materials Needed: Anti-rust spray
- Apply light coat of anti-rust spray to shearing blades and exposed metal
- Reinspect all areas before reconnecting power
Regular cleaning after each shift preserves functionality and extends equipment lifespan!
